File services now available on wired network

Today we have restored direct use of central file services on the Brown wired network, including access to files.brown.edu (which provides DFS, Research folders, XFER and other services) and lrs.brown.edu, for many computers:

  • Brown-owned Windows computers with the CrowdStrike Falcon security agent installed
  • Personally-owned Windows computers with the CrowdStrike Home security agent installed
  • Mac computers
  • Linux and other computers

Windows computers without CrowdStrike installed will still be able to use the wired network, but will not be able to access central file services directly.

Any computer using the Brown Wi-Fi (wireless) network will still need to connect to the VPN to access central file services at this time.

If you have any problems moving a Windows laptop between wired and Wi-Fi connections at Brown, please disconnect the wired network cable from your laptop or dock, and use your laptop on Wi-Fi only at this time. We are working on improving this experience.
